December 05, 2024 posted by Steve Brownstein

In this set of articles we begin with the "what is in a civil search - for  pre-employment screeners

In civil cases, the term commonly used for cases asking for money is "damages" or a "monetary claim."

Here are some specific terms often used:

  1. Compensatory Damages: These are intended to compensate the plaintiff for actual losses (e.g., medical expenses, lost wages, property damage).

  2. Punitive Damages: These are awarded to punish the defendant for particularly wrongful conduct and to deter similar future behavior.

  3. Restitution: This is money sought to restore the plaintiff to the position they were in before the harm occurred.

  4. Economic Damages: These include quantifiable financial losses, like medical bills or repair costs.

  5. Non-economic Damages: These cover intangible harms, like pain and suffering or emotional distress.

The case itself is often referred to as a "civil suit" or "lawsuit for monetary damages."
