FBI Releases October Background Check Numbers
November 07, 2016 posted by Steve Brownstein
The FBI has released their October report from the National Instant Background Check System (NICS).
A total of 2,333,539 gun-related background checks were processed last month, setting an all-time record for the month of October and a sharp increase from 1.9 million checks performed in September.
“These statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through the NICS,” the FBI said. “They do not represent the number of firearms sold. Based on varying state laws and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale.”
The dramatic rise in overall background checks is a continuing trend. A total of 1.1 million background checks performed during October 2008, and to over 1.6 million background checks in October of 2012.
The top 5 states in October were:
Kentucky 378,973
California 180,968
Illinois 169,348
Texas 144,467
Florida 111,657
Interestingly enough, every state saw an increase in the number of background checks for October, except Louisiana. The Bayou State only saw a 1 percent drop from September.
