Manager: UFC did an 'extensive background check' on fighter with criminal record

Earlier today, Bloody Elbow published a story on the UFC's latest heavyweight signing, Cody East. The former Legacy FC heavyweight champion's last fight is set to be featured on an upcoming episode of Dana White's "Lookin' For a Fight" series. The article focused on East's extensive criminal history in his home state of New Mexico, which included an acquittal on rape charges while in high school, plus a 3 year prison sentence after he was convicted of multiple counts of third-degree felony child-abuse and one count of misdemeanor battery.

East's manager, Jason House, has since responded to the article with a short statement regarding the background check process between Cody's management team and the UFC.

"The UFC conducted an extensive background check on Cody before offering him the opportunity to compete in the UFC. We submitted every document and statement regarding his legal past to their attorneys for review."

As noted in the original article, Bloody Elbow contacted the UFC on Thursday for official comment, but have not yet received a response. East, who holds a professional record of 12-1 with 11 wins coming by stoppage, is reportedly set to face Walt Harris at UFC 197 on April 23rd, although the UFC hasn't formally announced the fight booking themselves.
