NY Times: FBI Doing Background Check on Iowa Judge for Supreme Court
March 17, 2016 posted by Steve Brownstein
Federal agents are conducting a background check of a judge in eastern Iowa.
The New York Times reports the FBI is interviewing those close to Jane Kelly, who currently sits on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cedar Rapids.
Those who closely follow the Supreme Court nomination process have mentioned Kelly's name as a possible replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia, who died last month.
Experts see in Kelly several advantages for President Obama, who is seeking to overcome potential obstruction to making a nomination before the end of his term. She was confirmed to her current position by a 96-0 vote only three years ago, and could put pressure on Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, in the event he holds up or opposes a Supreme Court nominee from his own state.
